A New Wrinkle: Unapproved Botox Alternative
Sat Jul 20, 8:43 AM ETBy Delthia Ricks
With the soaring popularity of Botox, which in minutes can erase
decades from an aging face, it was only a matter of time before
a shady and dangerous knock-off hit the market, medical experts
said Friday
So new is the illegal wrinkle-eraser called Hyacell that a spokeswoman
for Allergan Inc., makers of Botox, said the company was unaware
of Hyacell's existence. Botox was approved for cosmetic injections
in April.
"This is insane. Insane," said Dr. Deborah Sarnoff,
a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist with practices in Greenvale
and Manhattan who specializes in Botox injections. "These
people have horrible infections now."
The compound that sickened people in the makeshift clinic is
based on hyaluronic acid, a natural, gelatinous substance that
makes up the vitreous fluid of the eyes and the cartilage of joints.
Sarnoff said the acid is being used widely throughout Europe in
the cosmetic-improvement business "because it can plump up
lips and fill out wrinkles." Hyacell is also said to have
embryonic extracts, an allusion to the promising but as yet unproven
stem cell therapy that has captured headlines.
